From time to time, each of us asks ourselves: “Why do I react this way?”, “Where do my habitual patterns of behavior come from?”, “Why do people behave differently in the same circumstances?”
One of the tools that helps find answers to these questions is the concept of personal adaptations in transactional analysis. It explains how a person adapts to the world around them, builds relationships, overcomes difficulties, and responds to stress.
What are personal adaptations?
Personal adaptations are ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are formed in childhood as the best way at that time to interact with the world.
They are not character traits that cannot be changed. On the contrary, they are flexible strategies that can develop throughout life. That is why knowing your adaptations helps not only to better understand yourself but also to expand your own choices in various life situations.
In transactional analysis, adaptations are not viewed as problems or diagnoses. Each of them has its own strengths and resources. Difficulties arise when a person uses only one habitual way of responding, even when it no longer helps.
How are adaptations formed?
Conventionally, all adaptations can be divided into two groups.
- The first group is related to survival. It is formed in early childhood, when the child cannot yet influence the world directly and seeks a way to obtain safety, attention, and support.
- The second group is formed later and helps a person interact with other people, achieve goals, build relationships, and find their place in society.
Each person has a unique combination of adaptations. That is why two people can find themselves in the same situation but react to it completely differently.
What types of personal adaptations exist?
The model of personal adaptations describes six main types. Explore their strengths and challenges:
| Adaptation Type | Strengths | Possible Challenges |
|---|---|---|
| Creative Dreamer | Rich inner world, creativity, deep reflection, independence, unconventional solutions. | Difficulties with openness to others, asking for support. |
| Brilliant Skeptic | Excellent analysis, attention to detail, risk anticipation, strategic thinking. | Excessive vigilance, issues with trust and relaxation. |
| Charming Manipulator | High communication skills, ability to persuade, negotiate, and achieve desired outcomes. | Excessive control, provoking conflicts instead of open dialogue. |
| Overreacting Enthusiast | Ease in getting excited about ideas, energy, inspiration, energizing others. | Forgetting about personal boundaries and needs, exhaustion. |
| Playful Resister | Seeing shortcomings, striving for change, innovation. | Difficulties with collaboration, automatic denial and arguments. |
| Responsible Workaholic | Ability to organize processes, responsibility, following through, reliability. | Problems with rest, recovery, and noticing personal achievements. |
Why know your adaptations?
Understanding your own adaptations helps to:
- better understand your reactions to stress;
- recognize the strengths of your personality;
- improve relationships with loved ones and colleagues;
- find the causes of recurring life scenarios;
- expand your behavioral repertoire in difficult situations;
- reduce internal conflicts and self-criticism.
Personal adaptations are not a problem that needs to be eliminated. They helped us adapt to life and interact with the world. It is important to learn to notice their influence and use your resources more consciously and flexibly.
